ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of structure teaching programme on Teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls selected College of Nursing, Mysuru. OBJECTVES: 1. To assess the knowledge regarding teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls. 2. To assess the effectiveness of structure teaching programme on knowledge regarding teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls. 3. To find out the association between pre-test knowledge of adolescent girls regarding teenage pregnancy with selected demographic variable. METHODS: In this study, one group is pre test and post test, pre experimental design was used and non probability convenient sampling technique was adopted to select adolescent girls in Vikram College of Nursing, Mysuru. Pilot study was conducted, the tool and study design were found to be feasible. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire. Structure teaching programme were given to the adolescent girls. The data were collected and analyse using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULT: The result of the study reveal that the significance of difference between mean pre test and mean post test scores which was statistically tested using paired ‘t’ test. The mean difference between the mean pre test and mean post test knowledge score was 8.98 with standard deviation difference ±0.18. The paired ‘t’ (59)= 29.03 which was found to be highly significant at 0.05 level of significance. The result also shows that the knowledge score of adolescent girls had no significant association with their selected demographic variables except age, religion, previous source of information. CONCLUSION: There for, the study concluded that administration of structured teaching programme was an effective method of improve the knowledge of adolescent girls regarding teenage pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION:
“It s hard to raise a child when you are still a child”:
Adolescents – young people between the age of 12 and 19 years are often thought of as healthy group. It is the transition stage between the childhood and adolescent.
The impact of modernization and technological ascertainment reflex in daily life. The lack of knowledge regarding the sexual life mainly leads to teenage pregnancy.1
Teen pregnancy is one that occurs from puberty to 19 years of age and is also known as adolescent pregnancy. Puberty the stage of adolescent when a younger girl can reproduce. Teenage pregnancy means females between the age of 12-19 who engage in sexual activity and become pregnant either intentionally or unintentionally.2
Adolescents challenges is that Teenage pregnancy, the major problem needed to be actively managed by term for the rest of their life. Pregnancy in every young women is generally considered to be a high risk event, because teenage girls are physically and psychologically immature for reproduction. In addition, there are some extrinsic factors such as inadequate prenatal care, illiteracy, poor socioeconomic condition which affect the outcome pregnancy in teenage girls.3
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls at Selected College of Nursing at Mysuru.
OBJECTIVES:
1. To assess the knowledge on teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls
2. To determine the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls
3. To find the association between the level of knowledge on teenage pregnancy among adolescent girls with their selected personal variable.
NEED FOR THE STUDY:
According to the report there are 600 million adolescents girls that stands at the crossroad childhood and adult world. As India is having largest population of adolescent around 243 million lives in India. Among these population 18 % of adolescent girls lives in Karnataka.4
Teenage pregnancy is on the rise, emerging as a serious problem today all over the world and more so in the developing countries like India. The highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the world is about 143 per 1000 girls aged 15 – 19 years in Africa. A study about teenage birth rates in Asian countries showed that, in India teenage birth rate is 45 per 1000 women aged 15-19.4
HYPOTHESES:
H1 Their will be significant difference between pre- test and post-test mean knowledge score of adolescent girls regarding teenage pregnancy.
H2 Their will be significant association between knowledge score of adolescent girls regarding teenage pregnancy with their selected Demographic variables.
METHODOLOGY:

Descriptive research design.
Variables:
1) Study variables are
Knowledge and Practice
2) Personal variables are
Personal variables in the study are age, gender, professional qualification, years of experience, recent history of needle stick injury, area of working
Setting of the study:
The setting is the physical location and condition in which data collection takes place. This study was conducted in JSS Hospital, Mysuru
Sample and Sampling:
Sample consists of a subset of population selected to participate in a research study. The samples for the present study consist of 60 staff nurses working in JSS Hospitals, Mysuru.
Sampling Technique:
Sampling is the process of selecting portion of the population. Sample from the selected hospital is selected using non probability and convenient sampling technique.
RESULTS:
Section 1: Description of selected demographic variables of study subject.
The data in table 1 shows distribution of adolescent girls according to their age, class of studying, religion, history of family members with teenage pregnancy, and previous source of information.

Data presented in table 2 shows that the pre test knowledge scores ranged from 7-13. The mean pre test knowledge score is 10.1 with a standard deviation ±1.76. The median score is 10. The post test knowledge score is 19.08, the standared deviation of ±1.94. and median of 19.
Findings related to comparison of pre test and post test knowledge scores of adolescent girls regarding teenage pregnancy.:
The mean difference between pre test and post test knowledge score is 8.98. This indicates an increase in knowledge scores after undergoing structured teaching programme. To find out the significance of gaining knowledge paired ‘t’ test value was computed and the obtained value ‘t’ (59): 29.03 was found to be significant at 0.05 level of significance. Hence Researcher interpret that the research hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis was not accepted.
Section 3: Association between the pre test knowledge regarding teenage pregnancy with their selected demographic variables.
Findings related to association of level of knowledge of adolescent girls with their demographic variables:
The computed chi- square value association between pre test level of knowledge of adolescent girls was found to be statistically significant at 0.05 levels for age, religion and previous source of information. But other demographic variables like class of study, and history of family members with teenage pregnancy were not found to be statistically significant at 0.05 level.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1) Large scale study can be conducted to generalize the findings
2) A similar study can be conducted by adopting true experimental design.
3) A comparative study can be conducted on knowledge regarding teenage pregnancy among nursing students and arts college students.
4) A similar survey may be replicated on a large sample for better generalization of results.
CONCLUSION:
The result of the study reveal that the significance of difference between mean pre test and mean post test scores which was statistically tested using paired ‘t’ test. The mean difference between the mean pre test and mean post test knowledge score was 8.98 with standard deviation difference ±0.18. The paired ‘t’(59) = 29.03 which was found to be highly significant at 0.05 level of significance. The result also shows that the knowledge score of adolescent girls had no significant association with their selected demographic variables except age, religion, previous source of information.
There for, the study concluded that administration of structured teaching programme was an effective method of improve the knowledge of adolescent girls regarding teenage pregnancy.
